Before Reading
Make a Chart
Think about how life can be compared to a journey. Then read about allegory on page 902 and make an allegory chart like the one you see there.
During Reading
Complete the Chart as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the selection. Imagine yourself doing the things the narrator says you do. As you listen write down elements, think about which ones might have an allegorical meaning.
2. Go back and reread the story. Add additional allegorical elements to your chart or cross out any that you've changed your mind about. Think about what each element might stand for and write your ideas in your chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Visualize
As you listen, try to see yourself doing all the things the speaker says that you do. Create a vivid mind movie, noting what you see, feel, smell, and hear. Write a quick summary of what you saw in your head as you listened to the selection.
After Reading
Summarize What You Wrote Down
Compare your allegory chart with a partner's allegory chart. What is the main comparison of this allegory? With your partner, talk about how this allegory fits your life.
