Repetition. Repetition is a writer’s conscious reuse of a sound, word, phrase, sentence, or other element. As you read “Hunger in New York City,” notice which words are repeated in the poem.

Parallelism. Parallelism is a rhetorical technique in which a writer emphasizes the equal value or weight of two or more ideas by expressing them in the same grammatical form.

Hunger in New York City” first appeared in Pembroke Magazine in 1976 with the title “Hunger in New York.” That same year it was published in Ortiz’s collection of poetry called Going for the Rain. “Hunger in New York City” explores different types of hunger experienced by a Native American far from his native land.
