“Huy Nguyen: Brothers, Drowning Cries” was published in After We Lost Our Way (1989). It tells the story of a Vietnamese immigrant, contrasting his old life as a refugee with his new life as a student in the United States. Mura wrote the poem about a student he had in a writing class at the University of Minnesota.
