Reader's Resource
According to O’Brien, “The best literature is always explorative. It’s searching for answers and never finding them.” This approach sums up his short story collection The Things They Carried (1990), in which the interplay between memory and imagination makes it difficult for the reader to distinguish what really happened. In “Ambush,” the narrator relives a moment of the Vietnam War when he killed another man with a grenade.
