Reader's Resource
In “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” a small boy finds a way to ease his poor family’s money problems, hoping thereby to please his cold and distant mother. Though the story seems quite realistic in many ways, it contains elements of the supernatural as well. This form is often called magical realism. In magical realist tales, fantastic elements are treated as though they are relatively normal or ordinary. The term is most often used to describe works by certain Latin American authors of the twentieth century but applies quite well to Lawrence’s story.
