Review the parts of a plot listed on page 32 of your text. Set up a plot pyramid to chart the parts of the plot of "The Rocking-Horse Winner."
During Reading
Complete the Plot Chart
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of "The Rocking-Horse Winner." Then review these paragraphs, using the marginal notes to help you identify the parts of the plot in this section.
2. Continue reading on your own. Keep making notes about elements of plot in your plot chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Connect to Prior Knowledge
If you are having trouble following the story, pause and do a quickwrite or have brainstorming sessions with a partner about money and the problems it can cause. Think about your own experiences and other experiences that you have heard. Discuss what happens when people don't have enough money and what people do to get money. Keep these ideas in mind as you continue reading the story.

Summarize What You Wrote
With two or three of your classmates, compare the ideas and events you included in your plot charts. Discuss the Respond to the Selection question on page 44.
