The Rising of the Moon” was a ballad popular with Irish rebel nationalists. Part of the ballad is sung on page 54. Written in 1907, this one-act play reflects the time when all of Ireland was under British rule, with the Irish Nationalist Movement struggling for independence. Today most of Ireland is independent, although Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom and is occupied by the British. However, the Catholic minority in Northern Ireland continues to seek independence from England and wants to join the Irish Free State. Peace talks have long been under way and people still seek a solution that will put an end to this five hundred-year-old conflict.
