Before Reading

Identify the Author's Purpose

Carefully read the definition of aim and the About the Selection on page 90. Make a cluster chart like the one on page 90. Use this chart to track your ideas about aim as you read the selection.

During Reading

Keep Purpose in Mind

1. Listen to your teacher read the first two paragraphs of the selection. Jot notes on your cluster chart.

2. Read the rest of the selection silently. Keep adding notes to your cluster chart as you read.

Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words

If you are struggling with the language in this selection, first preview the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes. Read each word, definition, and contextual sentence carefully. If you encounter other words you do not know, try to use context clues to determine the meaning of the words. If that does not work, consult a dictionary. After you read the selection once to unlock word meaning, read through it again, focusing on the purpose.

After Reading

Summarize the Purpose

With a few of your classmates, discuss the purpose of this selection. How did reading with this purpose in mind affect your reading?
