Before Reading

Think About What You Know

Write about the following questions: Have you ever been embarrassed because of something you couldn't do? How would you feel if you were suddenly able to do this thing? Then put together a list of the skills and talents you do possess.

During Reading

Use What You Know

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first paragraph of "The Story of Caedmon." Take notes about words that describe Caedmon's talent and how he felt before he received this talent. Then share your notes with the class. Describe how you would have reacted during feasts if you had been Caedmon.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own, taking notes about Caedmon's gift and how you would react if you were in his situation. Draw upon your past experiences as you think about how Caedmon might have felt.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you are having trouble following the miracle tale, try using the Guided Reading Questions. These questions will help you identify the tale's key points. Each time you reach a Guided Reading Question, stop, read the question carefully, and reread the text near the question until you find the answer. Continue reading in this way until you reach the end of the tale.
