Before Reading
Establish a Purpose
With a few of your classmates, share some riddles you know. Then read about riddles in the About the Selection section on page 107. As you read each riddle, try to figure out what the subject of each riddle is.
During Reading
Keep Purpose in Mind as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first riddle aloud. Try to find clues to the subject of the riddle as you listen. Then put the clues together to determine the meaning of the riddle.
2. Read riddles 2 and 3 on your own. Look for clues to the subject of each riddle. Write down a guess for the subject of each.
Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words
If you are struggling with the language in this selection, first preview the Words for Everyday Use. Carefully read each word, its definition, and the contextual sentence using the word. Then reread the sentence in the riddle that contains the word, using the information contained in Words for Everyday Use. If you encounter other words you do not know, use context clues in the riddle to help you determine the meanings of these words. If that does not work, consult a dictionary.
After Reading
