Before Reading
Read about romance and courtly love in Literacy Tools on page 182 of your textbook. Then create a chart like the one on page 185.
During Reading
Fill in the Chart as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the selection aloud. As you listen, add details to your chart about Tristan and the queen and how they fit the ideals of courtly love.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding details to your chart as you read.
Fix-Up Idea: Refocus on Organization
Read the first paragraph of the selection. This paragraph is an introduction to the story. The narrator speaks directly to the listener or reader about the story she is about to tell. Most of the rest of the selection is the story itself. In the last paragraph, the narrator addresses the listener or reader again. Keep this organization in mind as you read the selection.
After Reading
Compare Charts
With a partner, compare the notes you made in your charts. Then compare the ideals of courtly love to a more realistic relationship.
