Before Reading
Make a Chart
Read about chivalry in Literary Tools on page 187 of your textbook. With a few of your classmates, try to come up with examples of each virtue. Make a chart like the one shown there to track examples of the virtues of chivalry as you read.
During Reading
Fill in the Chart as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first five paragraphs of the selection. Notice descriptions of chivalric values that apply to Arthur and his knights.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own, looking for examples of chivalric values. Write examples that apply to the Green Knight on your chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Read Shorter Sections at a Time
If you are having trouble following this selection, try reading it in smaller sections. Read the first chapter, and stop and answer Guided Reading Questions related to that section. Write a brief summary of the section. Then continue on to Chapter 2. Keep following this procedure, stopping after each chapter to make a chapter summary.
After Reading
Compare Charts
With your group from the Before-Reading activity, compare the examples you put in your charts. Talk about the chivalric virtues of other characters in the selection.
