Before Reading

Make a Character Chart

Read about naive allegory in Literary Tools on page 243 of your textbook. Look at the list of characters on the next page. Then set up a chart like the one on page 243 to track the role of each character.

During Reading

Fill in the Character Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the opening lines of the messenger. Think about the purpose of the play identified in these opening lines. Keep this meaning in mind as you encounter other characters in the play.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. When you encounter characters such as Death and Fellowship, add them to your chart and describe their role in Everyman's journey.

Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words

Preview the footnotes in this selection before you read. Use the footnotes to help you understand the vocabulary in this selection. If you encounter other words you do not understand, use context clues or word parts to try to determine the meaning of the word. If you still do not understand the word, use a dictionary.

After Reading

Summarize

With a partner talk about the role of each character and the effect each character has on Everyman.
