Reader's Resource
This selection is from Spenser’s masterpiece, The Færie Queene, a long, epic romance dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. The Færie Queene uses material from medieval romances to tell allegorical tales dealing with religion, politics, and other matters. Spenser’s revival of medieval romance had considerable effect on later poets like Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In his epic romance, Spenser deliberately used archaic language in homage to Chaucer.

In this selection from The Færie Queene, the poet recounts the medieval story of the slaying of the dragon by St. George, the patron saint of England.
