Before Reading
Make a Chart
Create a sensory detail chart in your notebook. Write the words sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch down the left-hand side of the sheet. Then make two columns, one for "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and the other for "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd."
During Reading
Complete the Chart as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two stanzas of "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" aloud. Write sensory details from these stanzas into your sensory detail chart.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own, adding details to your chart as you go. Then read "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" and fill in the second column of your chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Think Aloud
Read "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" stanza by stanza. After each stanza, stop and do a think aloud about how you would respond if you were the person being addressed by the shepherd. Do the same thing for "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd," but take the position of the shepherd. What would be your reply to the nymph?
After Reading
Summarize Information
With a partner, compare the images you wrote in your chart for the two poems. How would you characterize the images in the two poems?
