Metaphor. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken or written about as if it were another. This figure of speech invites the reader to make a comparison between the two things. The two things involved are the writers actual subject, the tenor of the metaphor, and another thing to which the subject is likened, the vehicle of the metaphor. Look for metaphors as you read this poem.
Image. An image is a word or phrase that names something that can be seen, heard, felt, tasted, or smelled. Raleigh uses images that alter the images used in Marlowes The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.

Written in response to The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, by Christopher Marlowe, this selection is a mirror image of Marlowes poem in almost all its characteristics. The Nymphs Reply to the Shepherd, like Marlowes piece, makes many references to nature; it also has the same rhyme scheme and meter of Marlowes poem. There the resemblance ends because, as you will read, Raleighs speaker is thoughtful and resigned, rather than passionate. This piece is one of Raleighs best-known shorter poems.
