The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd
Interactive Literature Selections

Literary Tools
Metaphor. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken or written about as if it were another. This figure of speech invites the reader to make a comparison between the two things. The two “things” involved are the writer’s actual subject, the tenor of the metaphor, and another thing to which the subject is likened, the vehicle of the metaphor. Look for metaphors as you read this poem.

Image. An image is a word or phrase that names something that can be seen, heard, felt, tasted, or smelled. Raleigh uses images that alter the images used in Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.”

Reader's Resource
Written in response to “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love,” by Christopher Marlowe, this selection is a mirror image of Marlowe’s poem in almost all its characteristics. “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd,” like Marlowe’s piece, makes many references to nature; it also has the same rhyme scheme and meter of Marlowe’s poem. There the resemblance ends because, as you will read, Raleigh’s speaker is thoughtful and resigned, rather than passionate. This piece is one of Raleigh’s best-known shorter poems.
