Before Reading
Think About What You Know
Write a response to the Reader's Journal question. Then discuss your response with two or three of your classmates. As you read, think about whether the subject of the poem is popular, respected, or both.
During Reading
Use What You Know as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first stanza of the poem aloud. Think about what you learn about the woman addressed in this poem.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep thinking about what the speaker thinks of the woman he addresses. Answer the Guided Reading Question.
Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud
Work with a partner to examine the poem line by line. Read the first line aloud. Your partner should repeat the line back in his or her own words. Have your partner read the next line. Repeat the line back in your own words.
After Reading
Summarize What You Learned
With your group from the Before-Reading activity, evaluate the subject of the poem. What do you think of this person? Is she somebody you would like to know? Why? After your discussion, write a short explanation of your opinion.
