Before Reading

Make a Plan

In your notebook, make a chart for this poem by drawing a line down the middle of the page. In the left column, write 1–4, 5–8, 9–12, and 13–16. Use this chart to record your responses to the text.

During Reading

Write Things Down

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first four lines of the selection aloud. Write down your reactions in your chart. You may write questions that you have after hearing these lines, note how you would respond if you were the person being addressed by the speaker, or give any other reaction you have to these lines.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep noting your reactions as you read.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud

Read the poem aloud to a partner. Then, listen to your partner read the poem aloud. Talk about the points you emphasized and the emotions you felt while reading some of the lines in the poem.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, share the reactions you wrote while you were reading. Talk about how you would react if you were Celia and what advice you would give the speaker.
