Understanding Literature, page 332

Parallelism and Repetition with Variation. Consider the second verse of the selection. Notice that it is made up of four parallel phrases, each beginning with the words "a time." The second two phrases repeat with variation the ideas expressed in the first two phrases. How is planting similar to being born? How is dying similar to being plucked up? Review the chart you completed for Literary Tools. Discuss the similarities between the pairs in the rest of the poem.

1. Write two more verses that contain two pairs each of things for which there is a time.

2. Choose one of the pairs of times in this selection as the theme for a personal essay. In your essay, use examples from your own life to illuminate how there is time for both parts of the pair.

Complaint Letter.There is a time to accept and a time to complain. Think about a time when you received poor service, got something you didn't order, or had a problem with an organization. Write a firm, but polite, letter of complaint. In your letter, detail the problem and what you would like to have happen.
