Before Reading

Make a Chart

Read about parallelism and repetition with variation in Literary Tools on page 330 of your textbook. In your notebook, create a chart like the one on page 330.

During Reading

Fill in the Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two verses. Write any paired words on your chart.

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding paired words to your chart. Think about what the paired words have in common.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus

As you read, notice that the paired words are opposites or near opposites. Keep this in mind as you read each verse. Use this information to help you understand any unfamiliar terms.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, look at the pairs you wrote in your chart. What do these pairs have in common? How do these pairs relate to the overall message of the selection? Add a pair of your own that fits this purpose.
