Before Reading
Gather Information and Begin to Make Predictions
Preview act 2 and think about what you learned in act 1. Using the information you have gathered, make one or more preliminary predictions about the selection.
During Reading
Continue Making Predictions
1. Listen to scene 1 of act 2. Did anything in this act fit your preliminary predictions? Did anything make you change your ideas? What do you think will happen next? Write down your new predictions in your notebook.
2. Read the rest of the act on your own. Stop occasionally to assess your predictions, make new predictions, and write them in your notebook.
Fix-Up Idea: Read Shorter Sections at a Time
Try reading act 2 in smaller sections. Think about reading each scene as a separate section. When you finish reading each section, talk with a few of your classmates about the section you have just read. Talk about what action, symbol, emotion, or idea you found most striking in that section.
After Reading
Analyze and Verify Predictions
Go through your list of predictions. Put a star next to every prediction that you were right about. Put a check next to every prediction you changed as a result of new information. Share your predictions with a partner. Talk about what clues in the act led you to make and change your predictions.
