Before Reading
Make a Chart
Read about allegory in Literary Tools on page 524. Make a cluster chart like the one shown there. As you read, look for elements that signify something else. Add these elements to the cluster chart.
During Reading
Fill in Your Chart
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two paragraphs of the selection. What allegorical elements do you find? Add them to your chart. Add additional circles to show what you think the element represents.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding allegorical elements to your cluster chart and write what you think each element represents.
Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions
If you have trouble following the selection or identifying main ideas, go back and answer the guided reading questions. These questions will help you focus on main ideas or events in the selection.
After Reading
Summarize What You Wrote
With a few of your classmates, compare the allegorical elements you added to your chart. Work together to figure out the meaning of each element.
