Reader's Resource
The most famous of Lovelace’s poems, “To Althea, from Prison,” probably was written while Lovelace was imprisoned in 1642. Lovelace and Sir John Suckling are often paired as representative of the “Cavalier spirit,” but while both their work and their lives share similarities, there are as many differences. While Suckling’s verse is often flippant and lighthearted, Lovelace’s verse is thoughtful and somber.
