Omar Khayyám (ad 1048–1123) was born in Nishapur, Persia. The name Khayyám means "tent maker," possibly indicating the profession of Omar's father. Khayyám's primary occupation was as a mathematician and astronomer, and his work in algebra became a standard text. He also mastered the subjects of philosophy, astronomy, law, medicine, and history.
