Before Reading
Make a Chart
Read about fantasy in Literary Tools on page 599. Make a chart like the one shown there to record elements based in reality and those that are completely made up.
During Reading
Complete the Chart
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first paragraph of the selection. As you listen, note any fantastical elements based in reality and any that are completely made up.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding fantastical elements to your chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words
Preview the Words for Everyday Use and the footnotes. Read each term and its definition carefully. As you encounter these terms in your reading, refer to the notes as needed. If you encounter other words you do not recognize, use context clues to try to figure out the meaning. If you are still unable to understand the word, use a dictionary.
After Reading
Summarize What You Wrote
Look over the elements you wrote in your chart. With two or three of your classmates, discuss how Swift uses some of these fantastical elements in a satirical way. What aspects of society is he criticizing?
