Before Reading

Make a Character Chart

Read about the methods of characterization in Literary Tools on page 607. In your notebook, set up a character chart like the one on page 607.

During Reading

Fill in the Character Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs aloud. Add notes about the character of Oroonoko to your chart. Which methods of characterization does Behn use? What do you think of the character at this point in the selection?

2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep adding notes about Oroonoko. Remember to look for direct description, examples of Oroonoko's behavior, and descriptions of his internal states.

Fix-Up Idea: Reread and Summarize

After you read through the selection once, write down any questions you have or anything you did not understand. Then go back and read the selection again, paragraph by paragraph. Work with a partner to summarize each paragraph and answer any Guided Reading Questions. Also look for answers to questions you have.

After Reading

Discuss the Character

Review your notes about Oroonoko. With a partner, discuss the Respond to the Selection question.
