
Denotation and Connotation. The denotation is the basic meaning or reference of an expression, excluding its emotional associations. Normally we think of a dictionary as a reference guide to the standard meanings of words, and indeed Johnsons A Dictionary of the English Language is such a reference, the first great work of its kind in English. However, Johnsons Dictionary is also a piece of literature. Its definitions include insightful, witty commentaries on politics, mores, literature, and humanity.
A Brief to Free a Slave (1777) was written to aid Joseph Knight, a slave, in his legal action to obtain freedom from his Scottish master. While Scotland permitted serfdom, slavery had been abolished in England in 1772; however, the British slave trade continued until 1807, since slavery had always been integral to British colonialism.
