Before Reading

Make a Sensory Detail Chart

Remember that sensory details are words and phrases that describe how things look, sound, smell, taste, or feel. In your notebook, make a sensory detail chart like the one on page 749.

During Reading

Complete the Sensory Detail Chart

1. Listen to the first haiku. Add sensory details from this poem to your chart. Share your ideas with the rest of the class.

2. Read the other haiku on your own. Add details from these poems to your chart as well.

Fix-Up Idea: Think Aloud

If you are having trouble finding meaning in the haiku, work with a partner to think aloud about each poem. Read each haiku aloud. What do the images make you think of? Share your ideas and listen to those of your partner. Respond to each other's ideas.

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, discuss the effect of each haiku. What feeling or idea is raised by each image?
