Reader's Resource
Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Alice in Wonderland, was written in 1871. It continues the adventures of Alice through the make-believe world that Carroll had created, populated with live chessmen, talking insects, and the famous character of Humpty Dumpty (who Alice meets in this selection). This story, like the first Alice book, displays Carroll’s creative genius and love of puzzles and riddles. Some of the songs and poems are parodies of society, while some are comical bits of nonsense verse. The tales are amazingly intricate and complex, but they are also celebrations of the world of fantasy from which adults, unlike children, are too often separated.
