Before Reading
Begin to Make Mind Pictures
Preview the selection by reading the About the Selection paragraph on page 873. Begin to make pictures in your mind of what the selection will be about.
During Reading
Keep Making Mind Pictures as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs aloud. Picture yourself in this scene. How would you feel in such a place? How do the characters seem to feel?
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Keep making mind pictures as you read. Include sights, sounds, smells, and feelings in these pictures. Think about the mood and feelings these images evoke in you.
Fix-Up Idea: Write Things Down
If you are having trouble visualizing the scene, focus on the description in the selection. Make a sensory detail chart like the one shown in Literary Tools on page 873. As you read, write down details about the scene.
After Reading
Sketch or Summarize Your Mind Pictures
Make some quick sketches or write a summary of the pictures you created in your mind as you read. Discuss how Emma Bovary feels about her experience and whether you would feel the same in her place.
