Preview the selection by reading the About the Selection paragraph on page 916 and examining the art on page 917. Begin to make pictures in your mind of what the selection will be about.
1. Listen as your teacher reads section 1 aloud. Picture what the speaker describes. How does this description make you feel? 2. Read the rest of the poem on your own. Keep making mind pictures as you read. Include sights, sounds, smells, and feelings in these pictures. Think about the mood and feelings these images evoke in you.
Fix-Up Idea: Write Things Down
If you are having trouble visualizing the scene, try to write down individual images instead. Make a sensory detail chart like the one shown in Literary Tools on page 916. As you read, write down sensory details about the scene. What effect do these images have on you?
Make some quick sketches or write a summary of the pictures you created in your mind while reading. With a partner, discuss the mood of the poem.
