Begin to Make Mind Pictures

Preview the selection by reading the About the Selection paragraph on page 956 and examining the art on page 957. Begin to make pictures in your mind of what the selection will be about.

During Reading

Keep Making Mind Pictures as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first stanza aloud. Picture what the speaker describes. What images are most striking?

2. Read the rest of the selection on your own. Keep making mind pictures as you read. Include sights and sounds in these pictures. Think about the mood these images evoke in you.

Fix-Up Idea: Write Things Down

If you are having trouble visualizing the scene, try to write down individual images instead. Make a cluster chart like the one shown in the Literary Tools section on page 956. As you read, write down images from the poem. What effect do these images have on you?

After Reading

Sketch or Summarize Your Mind Pictures

Make some quick sketches or write a summary of the pictures you created in your mind while reading. With a partner, discuss the Respond to the Selection question.
